A new art installation, Skytown, is set to be installed at Dingle Park's entrance tomorrow after months of engagement, design, development and building work.

The new entrance to the Dingle Open Space will be installed on Thursday 19 March.

The elements that make up the piece were chosen by local people during the community consultation phase.

Cod Steaks state: ''Penarth Skytown Gateway | Porth Trefawyr Penarth is a charming, witty and uplifting artwork featuring many of the area's well-loved landmarks – the bespoke steel lampposts which form the framework bridge the pathway over the entrance to the park, much like the trees they're surrounded by, brancing out and meeting in an arch.

''Sitting atop the branches are beautifully scaled buildings, lampposts and key landmarks from around the area forming a wildlife metropolis. From the Customer house and the old swimming baths to a row of terraced houses and St. Augustine's Church, the buildings are distinctly Penarth.''

The iconic local buildings that fit into the final design are The Custom House, St. Augustine's Church, The Flat Holm lighthouse beacon, Penarth Pier Pavilion, The Clock Tower and the Old Swimming Baths.

During the building phase, over 4000 individual elements were precision-cut from steel to create the artwork.

This is then lit up by low-level LED's to bring the piece to life.

Their final report said: ''The lighting element will really bring the structure to life and is designed to be powered by the grid. Low-Level LED's ensure it is entirely inexpensive to run, has a long life-span, with the lights being triggered by the onset of darkness as per regular streetlamps.

''The lights aren't intended to run brightly but as a diffused, charming glow – giving the impression they could be inhabited. The Flat Holm lighthouse beacon will be run on a siren system, so it gently moves around as a feature of the sculpture.''

The Council secured funding through a Section 106 agreement with the developer of Penarth Heights to provide and improve public open spaces and facilities in the vicinity of the development.

Part of this funding includes the development of Public Art for the area.

Dingle Park is located off Windsor Road in Penarth. The entrances and boundary railings were considered to be unsightly and this was of particular concern as they are situated at a key location off one of the main roads into the town centre, giving a poor impression of the area.

This area was identified as requiring an upgrade in order to provide a visually impressive, exciting and high-quality gateway into the town.

A series of environmental improvements were proposed and consulted on including works to substantially upgrade the highway at Windsor Road, upgrade the boundary railings to Dingle Park and create a new entrance feature into the park which would also form a stunning gateway feature for the town.

Cod Steaks were selected to create a gateway artwork installation following a process of open tender. They have an impressive portfolio of public art as well as projects from a range of other industries including film, television, museum, exhibition and theming.

Cod Steaks have created a report for this project which covers all aspects from the initial community consultation, working with local schools to develop ideas for the installation, design development and work in progress pictures from their workshop.
