The 94th Penarth Scout Group - comprised of cubs, scouts and beavers - turned ornithologists last weekend to help the RSPB gauge the town's bird populations.

Members of various age groups spent an hour each in last weekend of January counting tallying bird species they spotted in their gardens.

This was part of the RPSB's Big Garden Birdwatch, which a eh organisation's communications director: "allows us to monitor trends and helps us understand how birds are doing. With results from so many gardens, we are able to create a 'snapshot' of bird numbers across the UK."

Through partaking, the 94ths have helped us remember that we share our town with wildlife - and that it belongs to them as much as it does us.

"While we're in lockdown, it gives the children something to do and it's part of their local community impact badge so they can earn something as well for doing it," scout leader Nicola tells Nub News.

"They had so much fun. Some of made their own bird feed table, they've made their own bird food - just had a laugh over the weekend watching them."

Asked whether the kids would let the competitive spirit get the best of them, Nicola responded:

"While we're in lockdown, it gives the children something to do and it's part of their local community impact badge so they can earn something as well for doing it.

"We don't cheat, we're cubs and scouts and beavers! They grasp the concept that it's not for them it's for birds in general and the RSPB."
