Penarth locals are invited to learn how to combat climate change at the upcoming Penarth Climate Action Weekend summit on June 11.

Organised by members of Eden Church and Stanwell Road Baptist Church, the free summit aims to explore what people can do individually and together as a community to make a difference against climate change.

Professor Alison Fiander, 64, from Cardiff University's School of Medicine and one of the organisers of Penarth Climate Action Weekend, told Penarth Nub News: "We just felt that we needed to do something, particularly for young people as they are inheriting the mess that we've made.

"What we wanted to do was organise a community event that would get people talking about the issues and thinking about the actions they could take."

There will be a litter pick up in the morning which is being organised by youth members of Eden Church. Exactly where in Penarth has not yet been decided by organisers.

Stanwell Road Baptist Church holds a coffee morning every Saturday which will be open as usual. This is also where an exhibition of young people's messages about climate change will be on display, and attendees are welcome to buy products from a fairtrade stall and a plant stall.

Reverend Dr John Weaver, the vice president of The John Ray Initiative which connects the environment with science and Christianity, will be the summit's keynote speaker.

A community event will be held in the afternoon starting at 14:00, where organisers will set the scene and discuss why climate change is an emergency now. "We have invited some politicians to come along, whether they do or not, but to tell us about what the Welsh Government is doing about climate change," said Professor Fiander.

The rest of the afternoon will be filled with various workshops for young people and adults. One workshop focuses on what we can do individually about climate change.

Another workshop will look at how people can interact with local and national governments to try and do something about climate change.

Members of the GPG, Penarth Climate Action and Penarth Growing Community will also be in attendance.

Refreshments will be available throughout the day and a feedback session will allow young people to share the messages they have written in one of the workshops.

The day's itinerary will start at 10:00 with a 17:30 finish.
