Penarth Mayor begins Remembrance commemorations

Penarth Town Mayor, Cllr. Ian Buckley began Remembrance commemorations today, with the lowering of a Remembrance flag at West House Community Garden.

It is an appropriate setting as, like in previous years, Council Facilities and Open Spaces Development Officer, Mark Hooper has created a wonderful Remembrance display in the garden to commemorate the lives lost in past conflicts.

The display features the silhouette of the Unknown Tommy and a handmade spitfire adorned with poppies. The structure was made using leftover materials from community garden projects and now takes pride of place on the front lawn of the Town Council offices.

The West House Community Garden has been a popular space for residents throughout the pandemic, with many coming for socially distanced meetups or quiet reflection amongst the blooms.

Mark, who designed the garden, is pleased that people are making use of the space and hopes that his Remembrance display will provide a meaningful setting for people to pay their respects.

The Town Mayor will mark the minute's silence at 11am on Thursday 11th November and join the ceremony laying Penarth's wreaths, before taking part in the town's Remembrance Parade on Sunday 14th.
