The Penarth community has come together to fundraise towards a local cafe's efforts to feed Llandough NHS staff for free during the coronavirus pandemic.

Nick Sylvester set up a Go Fund Me page with the original intention of raising money for a replacement laptop for the organiser of the local coronavirus aid group.

Kathryn Easthope, who created the Helping Hands Facebook page, ran into issues when her laptop broke; in the middle of attempting to organise hundreds of volunteers across Penarth.

The intention was to pay for the laptop and donate any additional money to Willmore's Cafe to help them continue to cook for NHS staff at Llandough hospital.

However, it has now collected over £1300, in total, since the donations began and Mr Sylvester has made the decision to keep the Go Fund Me open to collect more for the NHS.

The page explains: ''We previously raised money to buy a replacement laptop for the organisers of the Helping Hands group.

''With that goal now being completed, I thought it would make sense to leave the page open to allow Penarth residents to support another worthy related cause

''The folks at Willmore's 1938 have, using their own resources, provided 100 meals to the exhausted staff at Llandough hospital directly treating patients with Covid-19.

''While it is amazing they have done this themselves thus far, clearly, this is not sustainable.

''NHS staff are under considerable pressure during this time. We are getting reports that NHS staff are finding it hard to get basic food whilst on shift.

''Willmore's will provide ready-cooked homemade meals for NHS staff to take home or into work to keep them going. They are also teaming up with local traders to source produce - Trying to keep it local supporting the whole community and jobs.

''Frontline NHS staff are looking after us so we need to look after them.

''It is simple. Pledge money here and all of the proceeds will go to feeding NHS staff during this crisis.''

Penarth's Virtual Quiz group are also donating this week's winning voucher for a Willmore's treat when it reopens.
