In collaboration with ethical lifestyle brand, Grounds for Good, artist Nathan Wyburn has created a portrait depicting kindness towards homeless people, from used coffee grounds.

Limited edition prints are now ready to pre order and will raise money for leading homelessness and rough sleeping charity, The Wallich.

Wyburn, who specialises mostly in creating iconic celebrity portraits and pop culture imagery with non-traditional mediums, said, "2020 has been an incredibly difficult year for everyone. Isolation, loneliness and lack of human contact has impacted us all. None more so than those without a home.

"We've all seen the increase in people on the streets of Cardiff and it's heartbreaking. I felt the need to take part in this collaboration because I feel art is powerful, art can depict a message that often words can't.

"Hopefully, the prints and merchandise of this piece of coffee grounds art, can help raise some vital funds to help homelessness here in Wales."

Grounds for Good is an environmentally conscious social enterprise which launched in 2020.

The business specialises in wellbeing and lifestyle products, such as skincare; jewelry; and homeware items, which all embrace the beneficial powers of reused coffee grounds and their powerhouse extracts.

Generally, coffee grounds are used only once and then succumb to landfill. Decomposing coffee grounds in bulk quantities, and under anaerobic conditions, give off harmful methane gas and this is around 34 times more potent than carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas.

With an ever-increasing coffee-drinking culture, this problem is only set to worsen. Most coffee establishments have to pay high commercial waste rates to remove their abundant, wet and heavy coffee grounds.

Rosie Oretti, founder of Grounds for Good, said, "Grounds for Good are constantly striving to look at innovative ways to repurpose used coffee grounds and what better way than to create a meaningful work of art.

"We are so fortunate in Wales to have Nathan Wyburn – a renowned artist who is accomplished at using unusual mediums, such as coffee grounds, for his artwork.

"Together, we wanted to create a piece that would portray human kindness but also a strong message of hope."

Profits from this collaboration will go towards supporting the valuable work of The Wallich.
