The four trees that have been decorated on the iconic Penarth Town centre roundabout have been vandalised.

The incident happened yesterday evening and was found by local businesses and residents this morning.

Penarth Town council have issued a statememt on Facebook about the destruction of the trees.

They said: "Unfortunately some mean-spirited vandals have attacked the Christmas trees in the Town Center.

"We are working with Production 78 to mend any damage and get things back on track for Christmas as fast as we can!"

Penarth Town Council and Production 78, who designed this year's festive installation, have been working to assess the damage and are looking for replacement decorations to be delivered as soon as possible. 

Penarth Town Council takes this very seriously and are deeply disappointed by the destructive actions of a few.

Local Resident's Jess Plowright got in touch with the Town Council on her way home from work last night said: "I had stumbled across the Christmas trees not looking so great on the roundabout on my way home from work.

"My friend and I stopped the car to see if we could put them back up (being in Christmas cheer and hadn't wanting anyone or possible horrid weather to cause harm to the tree displays). We had then found that the trees look like they had been defaced or vandalised and seem to be broken."

This marks a trend of vandalism in the area where local traders have also commented that their Christmas Planters have been targeted as well as shop windows.

Penarth Town Council will be reviewing CCTV footage and liaising with the police.

The Council are determined not to let this dampen the festive mood and will be working to ensure that Penarth looks its best for next week and they thank all the local residents who have been very supportive and offered to help out in light of recent events.

The police are currently investigating these incidents and  anyone with any information which will assist is asked to call South Wales Police on telephone number 101.
