Willmore's 1938 in Penarth have collaborated with a number of other local businesses to deliver a load of meals and treats to Llandough Hospital staff.

The popular cafe, situated on Stanwell Road, made the difficult decision to close their doors on Friday but not before they could give something back to the NHS.

They said: ''So this is what happened on Saturday. We delivered 100 portions of homemade pies and lasagne to NHS staff at Llandough Hospital along with snacks, cakes and drinks.

''Thank you to Dotty Pots, Foxy's Deli and The Crêpe Escape for your donations.

''We will try and do this once a week whilst we are closed. One thing that's come from this horrid time is that we all need to help each other as much as possible whilst staying safe.

''Pass it on everyone.''

The Cardiff and Vale Health Charity responded to the effort and said: ''Your kindness and generosity are hugely appreciated and we're very humbled that our community is coming together to get behind and support our fabulous NHS staff.''

Pickford's Galley and Bar also whipped up a batch of Welsh Cakes to thank the NHS staff for all they had done.

They said: ''We made a big batch of Welsh cakes and dropped them off to Llandough Hospital as a tiny thank you for all the hard work you are all doing during these hard times.

''We hope you managed to have a 5-minute break and enjoy them with a tea or coffee.''

They have also made the decision to close their doors in the interest of staff and customers whilst the UK remains in lockdown.

A request was recently made by a nurse at Llandough hospital urging residents to donate to their medical staff caring for Coronavirus patients.

She said: ''We have set up a restroom for our medical team at Llandough who are looking after the 2 wards of Coronavirus patients.

''This enables them to have a break from the ward, have a coffee and a snack whilst staying away from the rest of the hospital.''

James Sommerin also did a similar meal donation for hospital staff last week after closing their doors temporarily which can be read about here.
