Griffin Books will be holding an event on Thursday, May 5 to discuss the relationship between nature and mental health issues.

The event will take place at the Old Penarthians RFC on St Mark's Road and will also celebrate Burn, a new book from author Ben Short which details his journey from working in a stressful advertising job in London eight years ago to becoming a woodman and charcoal burner in West Dorset.

Mr Short will be speaking about suffering from depression and anxiety even though everything appeared idyllic looking from the outside, with materialistic things such as a modern London apartment and expensive motorbike.

After leaving the city and working odd jobs in the Cambridgeshire Fens and the Devon countryside, Mr Short then found his calling in the West Dorset woods at the charcoal kiln.

Elin Davies, the events and communications lead at Griffin Books, told Penarth Nub News: "We're really pleased to be holding this event with Ben Short. The message of 'Burn', about getting back to nature, taking a break from a fast-paced city lifestyle, and the importance of mindfulness, is one we're keen to get behind and promote to the audience.

"We hope it can promote discussions about the effect that work can have on our mental health, and how we can change that. We're especially glad to be collaborating with Simon from Speakeasy Club on this event, as the work he's doing on opening up conversations about mental health with men is really important.

"This event would appeal to anyone who is interested in the healing power of nature, and the idea of getting back to basics!"

Griffin Books will host the event in partnership with Speakeasy Club, an events company that promotes discussions about mental health and donates experiences to those that would not usually have access.

The event will begin at 19:30. Tickets start at £5, and you can receive a signed hardback copy of the book for £15, including entry.
