Penarth independent businesses will come together to promote shopping locally with today's launch of 'Pay it Forward with a Penarth Fiver'.

Running from today (April 1) to April 16, the scheme has been set up by the Penarth Business Group and follows Penarth's participation in Fiver Fest last year.

When a customer spends £5 or more in one of the 57 Penarth independent businesses taking part, they will be given a Penarth Fiver. On the back of the Penarth Fiver, customers will need to write their names and contact information.

If the customer then spends another £5 or more in a separate business, they will be invited to hand in their Penarth Fiver and entered into a prize draw.

Angelina Hall, chair of the Penarth Business Group and co-owner of Glass By Design on Station Approach, told Nub News: "We did Fiver Fest last year which is run by Totally Locally and it was fantastic in bringing everyone together and for the shop local feel," said Angelina.

"But as Fiver Fest has come around again, we weren't sure whether to go ahead and do it this year. Fiver Fest is all about offering products that would have normally been more expensive at £5.

"We're trying to find things that we can sell at £5. Businesses have been hit very hard and because the cost of living has gone up so much, and the cost of buying materials, it's very difficult to find something that you could make any money on."

However, the group still wanted to work on a collaborative project with many Penarth independent businesses. "We wanted to create an event that would promote shopping locally," said Angelina. "A member of the Penarth Business Group mentioned a similar initiative in Bristol with the 'Bristol Pound', and that's when we worked on the idea of the Penarth Fiver."

There are ten hamper prizes to be won and all businesses involved will be donating a small gift for all the hampers. The hampers will also be displayed in the windows of Glass By Design.

"The more you spend locally, the more times you'll be entered into the prize draw," said Angelina. "We called it 'Pay it Forward' because it's that feeling of doing something for nothing and that you're helping our local town.

"It's very unique and very creative. We've come up with an event that isn't costing retailers anything apart from the hamper prize gifts they're donating, and it's about Penarth traders working together."
