Fiver Fest - a national celebration of independent shops and businesses - returns to Penarth next week.

Thirty-nine indie shops, cafes and retailers in the town will be taking part in the two-week campaign, which runs from 12 - 26 June.

Each partaking business is offering a £5 deal to incentivise shoppers to return to the high street and thank them for their support so far.

Over one hundred nationwide towns are taking part in the initiative. which was developed by independent shop campaign group Totally Locally.

"If every adult in Penarth spent just £5 per week in their local independent shops and businesses, it would mean £4.3 million per year going directly into our local economy," say Totally Locally. "Which can lead to more jobs, a better high street, a stronger economy and a nicer place to live. Makes you think doesn't it.

Angelina Hall, chair of Penarth Business Group and owner of Glass By Design on Station Approach, hopes the scheme will remind returning shoppers how rich and versatile Penarth's high street is.

"It's a great opportunity to show off the amazing diversity we have in our town," she told Nub News. "You can go from Jo's Organics on Glebe Street and even the Galley in the Marina all the way down to Apothecary 64 in Cornerswell Road and Pickford's at the seafront. This really spans the whole town."

"A lot of this is also about thanking our locals for all the support they've given us with some great deals."

Traders also hope the festival will increase footfall in the town, which has been reportedly low since the most recent lockdown was lifted.

"It's important that people know that shops are locally owned and that spending money with us makes a real difference," continued Angelina. "It's about trying to keep that money in the local economy."
