Penarth runners will see a weekly 5km Parkrun coming their way very soon.

Cosmeston has been chosen as the second Vale of Glamorgan site to run the event.

Parkrun organises free, weekly, 5km timed runs around the world.

They are free and accessible to anyone who would like to take part in them.

Barry Island parkrun was the first to start up in the Vale of Glamorgan and has seen huge success.

Lyn Evans, a Parkrun Event Support Ambassador, said: ''We're delighted to have agreed with the Vale of Glamorgan Council that Cosmeston Lakes Country Park in Penarth will be the new location.

''5k parkruns are community-led, free, weekly, timed runs held on Saturday mornings at nearly 700 locations around the UK (and more beyond).

''They are entirely organised by volunteers. Participants can run, walk or jog the course or join the volunteer team. For more information, click the red button below.

''We've already outlined a scenic 5k route with the Park Rangers and have start-up funding in place too.

''Of course, we've got a fantastic, safe park to run in plus the Lakeside Café on hand for the all-important post-run get together of runners and volunteers.

''Our aim is to integrate smoothly with other Saturday morning activities in the park.

''The next major step in the process (and we're hoping to start in late October or early November) is to pull together a 'core team' of volunteers to help in the final stages of set-up and the early months of operation.

''If you'd like to be part of the new core team and help deliver a brand new 5k parkrun at Cosmeston, then please get in touch with me, Lyn Evans, by email: [email protected].

''I'll be the Event Director. No previous parkrun experience is necessary (for runners or volunteers) - we'll provide all the training needed for the roles you'd be interested in.''
