Park event will be a boost for wildlife

VOLUNTEERS are aiming to raise hundreds of pounds to boost Penarth's wildlife with a plant and cake sale.
The sale at Belle Vue Park on Saturday (9 May) will feature dozens of plants, homemade cakes, children's activities and a seed and book swap.
The money raised will fund environmental improvements at The Kymin, where volunteers have been planting native tree species and encouraging wild plants to thrive.
"We've been working on the Kymin Garden's for five years and we now want to take our work to the next level," said Sally Hughes of Penarth Growing Community.
"We hope the plant and cake sale will give us the funds to buy more plants and fund more improvements for wildlife in the area."
As well as buying plants at the event, between 2pm and 4pm, children can plant herbs and flowers to take home and enjoy craft activities.
"We are hoping the event will not just raise money but be a bit of fun for the whole family," said Richard Parry, Chair of Friends of the Kymin.
The event is organised by GPG's Penarth Growing Community project alongside Friends of the Kymin.
Volunteers have been working to reduce the number of invasive plants in The Kymin woodlands and improve the thriving wildlife habitat.
"It's wonderful to look at the wildlife at the Kymin after the work we have done so far," said Mr Parry.
"The plant life is very rich, and we are noticing animals and birds of prey and it really has become a wildlife haven."
The group are hoping to raise enough money to fund tools for woodland and meadow management work and projects such as creating a "moon garden" full of night blooming plants, to attract moths. More moths would help support the gardens' bat population.
