It looks like Next Bike will be making its way to Penarth after winning a bid with the council.

At a meeting of the Vale cabinet today, a report by the cabinet Member for Neighbourhood Services and Transport stated:

''Next Bike won a bid to provide cycle hire in Penarth and plans are now underway to pilot the scheme.

''Following the success of the cycle hire scheme in Cardiff, the Vale of Glamorgan Council Transport Services team tendered for a cycle hire scheme provider.

''The successful bidder was Next Bike and plans are now underway to pilot the scheme in Penarth.

''Discussions are also being held with NextBike and Cardiff Council to ensure interoperability with the scheme in the two neighbouring authority areas.

''Following the pilot in Penarth, (which is being funded by Section 106 sustainable transport developer contributions), the scheme could be developed further afield with funding from Section 106 and bids to the Welsh Government active travel fund.

''Both regular cycles and e-bikes will form part of the scheme and assist in creating a healthy and active Vale.''

Cardiffian Next Bikers have been clocking up over up an incredible 411,665 km since the scheme launched.

The Cardiff scheme has been nextbike's most successful UK launch since it began operations in the UK in 2014.

Backed by Cardiff Council and financially supported by the Welsh Government, Next Bikes were introduced to reduce congestion, free up parking spaces and to provide a healthier way to travel around the city.

Next Bikes came up in the discussions during the Penarth/Cardiff Barrage Sustainable Transport Corridor Study.

They were proposed as potential options for improving sustainable transport across the barrage.
