A popular Cardiff bakery has expanded its presence to Penarth with a new location on Stanwell Road.
Ground Bakery opened its doors on April 6 and has received a largely positive response after its first week with a menu that includes a mix of hot beverages and light lunch plates such as Llys Meddyg smoked salmon and Spring Panzanella.
"There was quite a bit of hype around our opening," said Tom Simmons, 33, co-owner of Ground Bakery and former contestant on BBC's MasterChef: The Professionals in 2011. "People have been really supportive and flocked to us, which is great."
Ground Bakery already has a location in Pontcanna but always thought about opening more in key locations. He told Penarth Nub News: "We always had key areas to target when opening Ground Bakery and Penarth fits the demographic that our brand and our offering go towards.
"We're not the cheapest bakery, so we've deliberately picked Penarth to fit with our demographic. It's a place that we enjoy visiting ourselves and there are some great independent businesses there, so I thought we would fit in well."
Tom and the other owners have some exciting plans, with another location in the Vale of Glamorgan already on the cards and the potential to offer more at their current locations. "We've had an idea of turning our bakeries into pasta bars in the evening," he said. "Fresh pasta, just very, very simple using good ingredients.
"But until we find more staff, that's only a pipe dream. In the near future, we're focusing more on the retail side, so we'll have our branded eco-friendly takeaway cups, sell retail bags of coffee – we're leaving everything as it is for the next month and see what else we can introduce.
"We're really excited to be part of the local community and help support other local businesses."
