Local Campaign Group Fight Back Against 576 Home Cosmeston Development

A campaign group to stop the Welsh Government plans to build nearly 576 homes on land they own between Penarth and Sully is gaining traction locally.

The Keep Cosmeston Green Campaign has been established by a group of residents. The campaign aims to stop the housing development and to secure the future of this land as a natural community asset.

A Planning Statement outlines the controversial plans.

The application site comprises land allocated within the adopted Vale

of Glamorgan LDP for residential development (up to 576 dwellings),

associated community facilities, a primary school and public open space.

The allocated area of the site is 22.2 hectares although the site has been extended to the south to 25.2 hectares. The site extension is due to the land allocated for the school being accepted as too small to accommodate a 2 form entry primary school.

The organisers behind the campaign have detailed their grievances associated with the development proposals.

They state that the development at Cosmeston would:

• Permanently replace 60 acres of countryside with houses and roads

• Compromise the peace and tranquillity of our coastal path

• Destroy wildlife and their habitats

• Build over historic remains that few of us have had the opportunity to see

• Add thousands of extra cars onto surrounding roads every day

• Create further delays during rush hour

• Result in an increase in CO2 emissions

• Increase flood risk on Lavernock Road

• Overwhelm existing local medical services.

Keep Cosmeston Green are demanding that the land is kept green to ensure a lasting legacy for generations to come but they also want to go further than this.

The campaign will be demanding this land becomes a new natural community asset, with trees planted and the historic remains respected. They want to create a natural resource for everyone to enjoy.

The land outlined in red is at threat from the proposed development of 576 new houses.

The site:

• Is the habitat for an abundance of wildlife

• Extends from Lavernock Road to the coastal path

• Will increase traffic congestion for Barry, Sully and

Penarth commuters

• Has Iron Age remains

• Includes a rare post-medieval farmhouse

• Protects the wellbeing of future generations

• Is a valuable breathing space between local communities

• Has the potential for extensive tree planting to combat

climate change

A public meeting to find out more had been scheduled for the 26th March 2020, 7.30 pm to 9.30 pm. However, this has been postponed today due to the coronavirus.

We will update readers when a new date has been decided upon.
