Llandough Primary School is offering free food bags to help those in our community worst-hit by the pandemic.

The school recently secured a £3,000 grant from the Moondance Foundation - a Welsh charity - to fund the scheme.

Morrisons in Cardiff Bay offered to supply the food at a 15% discount.

The shop's 'Community Champions', Shannon and Lauren, received a shopping list from the school and delivered the first bags last week.

Deputy Head Teacher John-Lloyd Williams is urging families from the wider community to come forward and take what they need.

"It's not just for our children in our school, it's for the community as a whole," he told Nub News.

"When children come into school in the morning and haven't had breakfast, we know straight away.

"They're lethargic and their wellbeing takes a hit. So to support those families is paramount because it will help the children learn."

This is the second time the school has used a £3,000 Moondance Foundation grant to feed the community.

During the first lockdown, the team assembled food hampers and disseminated them to families in need across Llandough, Cogan, Penarth and Barry.

"The families definitely appreciated it as a time of difficult and it was very popular - very useful to our families and the community," continued Mr Williams.

He said people should never be too proud to use the scheme to help feed their children.

"We don't look it as charity. We're an inclusive school and there's no stigma around it."
