Live music? Tai Chi? Street food? Penarth has its say on the future of Pier Pavilion

The Vale of Glamorgan Council has published a report revealing the actions they have undertaken since resuming operational ownership of the iconic Pier Pavilion.

A number of "urgent works" have been identified and carried out, including air conditioning repairs, fire alarm replacements, and water hygiene and lift tests.

Such works enabled the Council to open The Big Fresh Cafe, the catering company they run, in the space once occupied by Waterloo Tea.

They have since performed additional maintenance tasks including external pressure cleaning and upgrading the building's broadband system.

Also detailed in the report, which cabinet will discuss on Wednesday, are the responses given to a public consultation regarding the building's future.

Based on the 1,087 responses provided, the Council concluded, "a majority would like to see the Pavilion include a cinema space with an accompanying cafe, bar or street food space that could be used throughout the day and evening time."

However, a PACL spokesperson told Nub News stated that it would be impossible in his view for the cinema to operate " in the absence of an ongoing commitment of public funds to support operational expenditure."

The report continued:

"A large proportion of respondents would like to see the space used for live music, theatre and comedy performances.

"Many respondents would still like to see the space used for classes and group sessions for older and young people." Tai Chi was the only specific class activity suggested.

Respondents were broadly opposed to the building being used for "business and exclusive events".

Almost half (485) of the responses were from those aged between 34 and 54. Roughly two thirds of respondents are female.

The report comes two and a half months after Penarth Arts and Craft Ltd (PACL) surrendered its 125-year lease of the building.

Beginning in 2011, the charity's lease was by 2018 mired in financial difficulties and board resignations.

Accelerated by the pandemic, PACL's downfall has culminated in the commencement of liquidation proceedings.
