What's replacing Waterloo Tea at Pier Pavilion?

Posters have appeared on the windows of the Pier Pavilion, revealing who will run the building's cafe when it reopens.

The Big Fresh Catering Company - which focuses on delivering "healthy", "balanced" and "innovative" food - will replace Waterloo Tea as occupants of the Pier Cafe.

This comes as the iconic building changes hands back to the Vale of Glamorgan Council following the charity Penarth Arts and Crafts Limited (PACL) surrendering its 125-year lease.

Based in Barry Island, The Big Fresh Catering Company was formed in April 2017 as a "Local Authority Trading Company" run by the Vale of Glamorgan Council.

It is in effect the Council's very own catering company, serving 52 schools in the Vale - including St Cyres, Victoria Primary School, and Albert Road Primary School.

It also caters for corporate clients and is in the process of opening an "Airstream" food truck.

The company became self-sustaining in January 2020, no longer relying on subsidies from the Vale of Glamorgan Council.

The business plan is to generate profit and for those profits to be "invested straight back into the schools which use the service".

Further details, including a statement from the Vale of Glamorgan Council, are set to emerge this afternoon.
