The British Book Awards, or Nibbies, have today revealed the regional shortlists for the 2020 Independent Bookshop of the Year with a record 49 bookshops from nine regions across the UK and Ireland vying to be named the country's best indie retailer for books.

Penarth's very own independent bookshop, Griffin Books, has been shortlisted for the award for the 3rd year running.

Griffin Books owner, Mel Griffin, said: "We're thrilled to have been shortlisted once again for the Independent Bookshop of the Year (Wales region).

''This UK award recognises the efforts we and the other wonderful bookshops on the list make day in, day out, to provide excellent customer service whilst also organising author events, running book clubs, visiting schools and supporting our local communities in all sorts of ways.

''All of us here at Griffin Books love what we do, but we couldn't do it without the support of our lovely and loyal customers, so thank you all for your support!"

The shortlisted shops will compete to win their region first—to be announced on 20 March—with those stores battling for the top prize at the Nibbies ceremony on 18 May.

The overall winner will be presented with a cheque for £5,000 to be put towards the running of the shop.

Griffin Books recently announced the stellar line-up of authors who will be visiting Penarth over the next few months.

These include Joanna Trollope, Jon Gower, Joanne Harris and Alexander McCall Smith, to name only a few. Plus, The Orenda Roadshow – an evening of international crime fiction – will roll into Penarth on Friday 28 February, the first time in its 4-year history that the tour has come to Wales.
