Glass By Design Reopens With Socially Distanced Teaching Workshop

Glass by Design has been shut for a long period of time due to the coronavirus pandemic, but they have reopened with an innovative approach to their face-to-face teaching methods.

They have a plethora of safety measures in place to ensure that customers can return to the shop to browse and purchase unique, handmade pieces once again.

One of the most impressive features of their updated store can be found in their new teaching space.

Pictured above you can see the approach they have taken to achieve this. Perspex screens divide workspaces into individual bubbles, with separate toolboxes for each student.

A space has then been created between all of these individual areas where the teaching can take place right in front of these workspaces.

The best part of it all is that the room remains bright, spacious and sociable. Screens may separate learners and teachers, but you can hear everything going on and you really feel like you are still part of a group learning experience.

Nub News visited Angelina Hall and Cathy O'Doherty to talk to them about adjusting to a new normal.

They said: ''We didn't have an online shop set up during our closure because the products we have on offer are unique and very changeable.

''But, we have kept up to date with our window displays and people have got in touch about specific items which has meant we've been selling bits and pieces the whole way through.

"As a shop we decided to shut before the government announced that we had to. We wanted to protect all of our customers and families.

"Now we are ready to get back to it and have created a space which will allow us to do that.

''Teaching is the real backbone of our business and we have missed it a lot.

''People need to feel safe and know that we are taking the precautions but also that they feel free and don't lose that sense of enjoyment that comes with our courses.

"We've followed all of the guidance with this approach. You can come with your family, or with another household and enjoy yourselves in a safe and socially distanced manner.

''We have had to adapt to a very different way of teaching. It was very hands on before COVID and we have been learning and testing ways of achieving the same level of quality in our teaching, but safely. Thinking of ways around that has been challenging but we are really happy with the results."

If you had a course booked and it has been postponed the team will be in contact with you by the end of June to offer customers new course dates.

Once the backlog is sorted then we will publish a new teaching timetable, so anyone can start to book and enjoy a day out.

In the meantime, the shop has a wonderful array of new handmade work for Penarthians to see.
