Rose bushes purchased by a local lady for the benefit of Penarth have now bloomed in Alexandra Park.

Swedish-born Barbro Perkins, who lives on the Esplanade, spent £400 of her own money to replant the bed adjacent to the steps that lead up to the Memorial.

The rose bushes there had taken on a rather shabby appearance over recent years. She replaced them with over thirty apricot/orange rose plants called 'Simply the Best', which were then planted in January by groundskeepers.

"I just thought to myself, 'well, instead of moaning, why don't I do something about it?'", she told Nub News.

Barbro said she had saved money over the course of the pandemic and wanted to do something nice for the community.

"I thought, why not do something that gives people pleasure?" she continued. "People in the past set up these beds so we in the future can enjoy them. We have a responsibility to look after them, and I think this one is even more important because it's outside the memorial.

"I'm so thankful for the generosity that has made all this possible!"

But she didn't stop there. In April, she and her son set up a crowdfunding page to replace the dilapidated bed that lies beneath the War Memorial.

The campaign was a remarkable success, surpassing the £1,000 target in just two days.

Eighty-eight rose bushes will be planted in autumn, the optimum time to do so in preparation for the spring bloom. The £220 excess has been spent on various plants which will soon be planted in Alexandra Park.
