A campaign to raise £1,000 to replace the run-down Memorial Garden rose bushes in Alexandra Park reached its target within just two days.

Resident Barbro Perkins, who organised the GoFundMe campaign, this morning used the sum (which currently stands at £1,285) to purchase 88 rose bushes from Rumwood Nurseries, a supplier in Kent.

She ultimately opted for a floribunda rose aptly named "Remembrance".

They will be planted in late November, the optimum time to do so in preparation for the spring bloom.

"It's really amazing," Barbro tells Nub News. "The money is still coming in; I had two people calling me this morning saying they wanted to donate in person."

Four months ago, Swedish-born Barbro spent £400 of her own money to anonymously replant the bed adjacent to the steps that lead up to the Memorial.

This time, almost 100 people have come together to improve the public space for everyone to enjoy.

"I feel really quite moved, and some of the comments are simply wonderful," continues Barbro.

Many of such comments reflect the sentimental value of maintaining the park's flora.

"Those flowerbeds mean so much to myself and my family," one reads. "We have scattered ashes of some dear relatives of ours there and lay flowers every month."

"A great reminder of what it means to be part of a community," added another.

The surplus funds will be spent on enhancing other areas of the park.

"The gardeners said they are not allowed to handle the money, but that they will come with me to the garden centre to choose what they need and then I can pay using the GoFundMe money," says Barbro.

"The top people in the Council are aware of it all so everything is above board and we're all very happy with it."
