Residents and music lovers in Penarth will be able to spend this week enjoying the delights of the Penarth Chamber Music Festival.

Established in 2014 the festival is based in the Penarth Pier Pavilion and there will be four days of glorious music making starting on Thursday, 6 July.

The full programme.

This year the festival features soprano Claire Booth in performances of Ravel's mysterious Chanson Madécasses and Schoenberg's radical, beautiful and dramatic Pierrot Lunaire. Violinists Magnus Johnston, Laura Samuel and Lucy Gould join Artistic Directors David Adams and Alice Neary alongside viola players Tom Dunn and Rebecca Jones, and cellist Philip Higham for Mendelssohn Octet and Dvorak Sextet.

Pianist Jâms Coleman, clarinetist Thomas Verity and flautist Matthew Featherstone make up the "Pierrot" ensemble and Steven Hudson, oboe will star in the Late Night Concert Myths and Legends.

There is a bohemian flavour to the programme which opens with Dvorak Piano Quartet in D and closes with a concert featuring Janacek, Smetana and Dvorak.

Friday night's concert includes works from the darker side of life in a Moonlight Concert - Debussy cello sonata, subtitled "Pierrot fâché avec la lune", the aforementioned Pierrot Lunaire by Schoenberg and Schubert's moving and exhilarating string quartet Death and the Maiden.

Alongside Brahms' 1st string quintet in F major and the exuberant Mendelssohn Octet, Welsh born composer Hilary Tann is represented in the Gala Concert

A full guide to the festival can be found here.

"The Walls of Morlais Castle" was first performed by David and Alice in 1998 and they will be joined by oboist Steven Hudson for this performance.

The idea of Myths and Legends is explored further in Saturday's late night concert with readings to compliment Debussy Syrinx, Britten Metamorphosis after Ovid and Szymanowski Mythes.

Saturday starts with a refreshing Coffee Concert - Mozart in the Morning!

The festival continues to develop its outreach projects including a Relaxed Concert and workshops, a Family Concert featuring children from Cogan Primary School led by PCMF's regular animateur Lenny Sayers, 2 Young Musicians Showcases and a public masterclass with former member of the Belcea String Quartet Laura Samuel.

There will be illustrated talks by James Lea, introducing Pierrot Lunaire and a light hearted talk about chamber music entitled "How do they get it together?" by Donal Bannister Principal Trombone BBCNOW.

The popular Flat Holm Island Discs will this year be a celebration of the life of broadcaster and journalist Nicola Heywood Thomas who sadly died in April.

The music will be chosen by her family and friends to reflect her passionate love for music throughout her life and performed 'live' by the festival musicians.

Tim Rhys Evans OBE, Director of Music RWCMD, and Rachel Jones CEO Arts & Business Cymru will host the event, as two of Nicola's closest friends.

This vibrant mix of international artists and the astonishing array of local musicians should make for exhilarating, uplifting performances.
