A dog and its owner were saved by emergency services from the edge of a cliff in Penarth yesterday afternoon (May 22).

The dog had fallen off the cliff edge and managed to cling onto a bush some way down, while the owner also became stuck when trying to save the animal.

A statement from South Wales Police said: "At around 12:48, officers were flagged down by members of the public about a dog who had fallen over the cliff edge while on a walk, his owners were located and tried calling the dog, but the dog was hanging onto a bush about a third of the way down the cliff face.

"The owner tried to climb up to get the dog from the bottom of the cliff and also become stuck on the cliff face hanging onto a tree.

"Fire service and coast guard assisted, safely rescuing both the owner and dog.

A further statement from South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: "At approximately 12:48 on Sunday, May 22, we received reports of an animal rescue near Penarth Pier in Penarth.

"A crew from Penarth Fire and Rescue Station attended the scene alongside emergency service colleagues.

"Crews successfully rescued a dog from an embankment using a seven-metre ladder.

"A stop message was received at approximately 13:29."

A body was also found off the coast of Penarth yesterday afternoon (May 22), believed to be a man called Victor, 56, from Pucklechurch in Gloucestershire who went missing earlier this month.
