Penarth Coastguard was tasked with aiding Central Beacons Mountain Rescue on two occasions over the weekend after a walker and mountain biker sustained injuries.

Saturday saw Penarth Coastguard's called to help Mountain rescue who were locating a lady walker who'd slipped and injured her ankle whilst walking at Scwd Yr Eira waterfall in our Ystradfellte Waterfalls area.

Passers-by had phoned for help and gave detailed and accurate information on the location of the lady, which allowed the rescue team to be with her in very short space of time.

Working with Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust paramedics the rescue team immobilised her suspected broken ankle and a stretcher carried her to their Maritime and Coastguard Agency.

The lady was flown to a hospital.

Their second call-out came on Sunday when Penarth Coastguards were tasked to set up and secure Helicopter Landing Site (HLS) Blackweir at St Athan for the Central Beacons Moutain Rescue after a casualty was involved in a mountain bike accident in the Ystradfellte Waterfalls area.

The gentleman had sustained serious injuries and was treated for potential spinal and pelvic injuries.

Having been fully immobilised he was initially evacuated from within the trees on an MR stretcher to an open area from where he could be loaded onto R187, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency SAR helicopter from St Athan for an expedient transfer to the hospital in Cardiff.

The casualty suffered spinal injuries and was transported by the Welsh Ambulance to UHW upon arrival at HLS.
