Since the new year, the Glebe Street Danish bakery Brod has been donating excess bread and pastries to staff at NHS testing facilities.

The bakery was founded by Dane Betina Skovbro, who moved to Wales in 1998.

The first Brod bakery opened on Wyndham Crescent in Cardiff in 2015 before arriving in Penarth four years later.

Brod has become famous in the town for its snegles (snail-shaped pastries), spandauers (flaky Danish pastries) and wide range of loaves and other treats.

Although immensely popular, the Penarth branch was searching for a good cause to receive its unsold items at the end of the day when Stol Coffee's Piotr Skoczylas suggested Daniel Wooles.

Daniel is a Penarth resident who works on the mobile COVID-19 testing units, providing self tests in Swansea.

On several occasions since, Daniel has collected excess goodies and delivered them to his colleagues in Swansea or at the Splott testing centre.

"It's making a big difference," he told Nub News. "The fact that Brod are being so generous is really lifting the spirits... and the sugar helps too."

Molly Utting, who runs the branch, says she and the team are more than happy to help.

"Our goal is to make people happy, and the staff need that extra boost at the moment. We really appreciate everything they're doing and if you can give back in any way at all then that's a great thing to do.

"We hope that our pastries brighten somebody's day - we have lots of customers who say they do - so this is just a nice way of giving back."
