Local residents and walkers may have noticed a severely burnt transit van at the entrance to Dinas Woods over the bank holiday weekend.

Penarth Nub News got in touch with the local fire service to find out how the van had ended up in its sorry state.

A spokesperson for South Wales Fire and Rescue said: ''At approximately 2:56 am on the 24th May 2020 we received reports of a vehicle fire on Millbrook Road in Dinas Powys.

''A crew attended the scene and extinguished the fire.

''A stop message was received at 3:25 am.

''The supposed cause has been deemed as accidental.''

Reports on social media have suggested the owner of the van managed to escape the fire with his dogs just in time.

This wasn't the only incident over the weekend in the village of Dinas Powys.

Dinas Powys Community Matters reported that a mini-dumper was stolen from St Andrew's Cemetery (opposite St Andrew's Church) at around 7:20 pm on Friday. The gates to the cemetery were chained and padlocked but the chain was cut off.

The mini-dumper was being used as part of a programme to increase the capacity of the cemetery so that residents could continue to be buried in the village should they wish, rather than be turned away due to lack of space.

They have since updated residents after the dumper was found on Rover Way and returned to the depot for repairs. They are still appealing for information and you can contact the police on 101 or contact the Clerk to Dinas Powys Community Council on 029 2051 3114.
