Members of Penarth Civic Society have been reflecting on a year of achievement in the organisation's latest newsletter.

And in particular wildflower areas have been highlighted and the work of volunteers who comprise the Friends of Victoria Square praised.

The newsletter, which also bears the society's new logo designed by youngsters Owen and Elinor Evans, reports on the Friends' efforts, saying: "After a considerable amount of work by dedicated volunteers, we are starting to see the full fruits of our labours.

"In particular, and what was considered a bit of a failure last year, the wildflower areas, after a considerable amount of re-working by volunteers, are now established and present a beautiful backdrop in a number of areas."

The financial position of the Frieds group is also discussed and the management of projects within budget commended.

The newsletter says: "We are now coming towards the end of the Heritage Lottery Fund and Welsh Government, grant period, and we have approximately 10% of funds left.

"For the future we will need to continue raising funds to ensure that essential maintenance continues.

"Recently we have held some fundraising events, a plant and cake sale and the Big Lunch Jubilee celebrations, which helped us to raise approximately £1,000 of funds for the future. As we look back to what has been achieved with the £30,000 of funding, we can be happy that the trees and ground of the Square have benefitted from the project and that the ecology and biodiversity has been improved in the area.

"Our membership is now at 120 members and we regularly have between 10 and  15 people volunteering on a Saturday morning. A number of volunteers can also regularly be seen attending to ongoing horticultural maintenance during the week.

"During the project we have engaged with a wider community to enable them to enjoy the benefits of the Square, including; local schools, young peoples' groups, Age Concern, a Cardiff & Vale Support group and have made cross community connections with a number of similar groups in the area.

"Our thanks for helping us to deliver this project, go to Heritage Lottery and Welsh Government for funding the project, Vale Council Parks and Open Spaces for their support and collaboration, to All Saints Church for their collaboration, and of course to our members for their support."
