Yesterday marked the passing of the mayoral chains from Cllr Angela Thomas to Cllr Mark Wilson but due to current circumstances, it was far from the traditional handover.

The Annual AGM was held online and conducted virtually via Teams.

Mayor Mark Wilson, who has been the Deputy Mayor for the past year, previously held the Mayoral position in 2006/2007.

Cllr Mark Wilson is a Penarth Town Councillor for the Stanwell Ward and also represents the same ward for the Vale of Glamorgan Council.

Cllr Ian Buckley was chosen by the new Mayor as Deputy. Both are members of the Welsh Labour party.

Ms Thomas said: ''Congratulations and good luck to Cllr Mark Wilson and Cllr Rhianon Birch, the New Mayor and Mayoress of Penarth.

"The Penarth Mayoral chains were passed over today to very experienced and hardworking Councillors for the 2nd time as Mayor and Mayoress.

"It was an honour and privilege to serve as Penarth Mayor over the last year, although it didn't quite end as I thought it would.

"I am very proud to see the Penarth community coming together at this time. A big thank you to all of the businesses that have helped and supported my fundraising over the last year.

"I wish the new Mayor and Deputy Mayor Ian Buckley well, and hope by September normal services will resume."
