A Penarth man has been jailed for three years and eight months after admitting inflicting five stab wounds with a shard of glass during a brawl with a former acquaintance.

The incident happened in July on a night out in Penarth town centre when Conor Dawson, 23, from Windsor Road, became involved in a brawl with Gareth Williams, who he knew previously.

The two clashed following a verbal exchange. During the fight Newport Crown court heard that Dawson picked up a shard of glass lying on the floor and used it to inflict wounds to Mr Williams' body and leg before running off.

At an earlier hearing Dawson had pleaded guilty to wounding with assault. At the sentencing hearing the court heard he had previous convictions for a public order offence and possession of an offensive weapon.

Defence barrister Harry Baker told the court Dawson was remorseful and had written a letter of apology. However, Judge Shoman Khan gave little weight to the remorse and issued the 44 month sentence.
