Penarth Rugby Club have donated £450 to Marie Curie Hospice to help fund the purchase of Christmas decorations.

The club was responding to a November appeal for donations posted by the hospice, who have been unable to decorate the building's interior due to COVID restrictions.

The decorations include beautiful reindeer ornaments, flashing stars and a Christmas tree, which are visible from the patients' rooms.

Hannah Leckie, community fundraiser at the hospice, told Nub News the decorations will make a "huge difference" to the wellbeing of patients.

"We always try to make the hospice special at Christmas because for many of the patients it could be their last Christmas.

"That felt more important than ever this year, but we couldn't do the indoor decorations because of COVID restrictions. We then thought having some outside lights would be a nice idea and up stepped Penarth Rugby Club."

Club Chairman Sean O'Sullivan, downplayed the act of generosity.

"They said there were looking for decoration donations and we just though 'there's no argument really, we've got to do it.'"

"The rugby club isn't on the breadline, we're not spending any money this year, so we might as well do something with it. We're a community club, so we should be helping the community."

Youth Section President Richard Smith, who initially saw the post, added:

"We just wanted to spread some cheer really. It's been a difficult year for everyone, but obviously especially so for the people in here so we just wanted to do it."
