Special needs school Ysgol Y Deri has become the eighth school in the Vale of Glamorgan to report a COVID incident.

The school - which cares for children aged three to 19 and was recently the focus of a BBC documentary - has decided to isolate two reception classes after a teacher and a student displayed symptoms.

In a social media post, the school commented:

"Yesterday (September 23) we took the decision to isolate two classes and staff in P Red after a teacher and pupil had symptoms.

"The teacher has been for a test, but we were unable to have the pupil tested.

"We therefore took the action as a precaution – we have not had a confirmed case at this time.

"This action would normally only be taken after a confirmed case.

"Given the nature of our school Public Health agreed this measure as a precaution that is in line with our risk assessments."

In a letter to parents and guardians, head teacher Chris Britten added: "In line with Government guidance, I can assure you that all affected areas will be deep cleaned before we ask your child to return to school.

"I appreciate this may cause you a mild inconvenience.

"However, rest assured that we have your child's and our staff's health and wellbeing at the core of our decision making."

The school has been widely lauded for its approach to caring for special needs children following the release of the BBC documentary "A Special School", which is available on iPlayer.

Other schools in the Vale that have isolated classes or year groups include: High Street Primary, Ysgol Sant Baruc, Dinas Powys Primary School, Whitmore High School, Oak Field Primary, Jenner Park Primary and Palmerston Primary.

The Vale of Glamorgan Council has been approached for comment.
