A local initiative is sparking change through a new series of events, designed to inspire people to become changemakers.

The Spark Sessions for Changemakers are designed to spark new ideas, new connections, new collaborations and partnerships, and create a ripple effect of inspiration in our communities.

Penarth-based Nikki Giant launched the Spark Sessions for Changemakers in 2023 and now hosts the events every other month in Cardiff and online, with the aim of connecting people to their purpose, passion and 'spark' to create social change.

The events are creating a community of inspired thinkers and doers who are ready to put their purpose and passions into action to support people and planet. With inspiring speakers and 'lightning talks' where anyone can take to the floor to share their project or initiative for two minutes, the events aim to provide changemakers with the tools, knowledge and community to find smart solutions to the complex problems we face.

Speakers share their journeys to create change, from promoting positive mental health to tackling homelessness, climate change or gender-based violence, showcasing local changemakers and social entrepreneurs who are doing great things in South Wales and beyond.

Organiser Nikki Giant shared how the events are designed to support anyone to become a changemaker. "Often when we think about creating change, we associate it with people who are leading organisations or with a big vision to create social change, but the world needs all of us to ignite our spark of purpose and passion and be a changemaker in whatever way we're able to. Small acts of changemaking can have a powerful effect, especially when we come together with a community of positive, like-minded people."

The next event will be held on Thursday 21st March from 6-9pm at The Bike Lock Cafe in Cardiff, a social enterprise designed to promote active travel. Speakers will include Bridgend-based Dan Newman who will be sharing his new venture, Baldilocks, born from his personal trauma of experiencing alopecia. Dan will be joined by the Antarctic Fire Angels, two serving fire fighters who trekked to the South Pole in January 2024 and are passionate about inspiring the next generation to break stereotypes and build confidence and self-esteem.
