Penarth residents affected by the burst mains this morning should have their water supplies restored by early evening, says Welsh Water.

As of 5pm this afternoon, water was still flowing from the breached pipe down Windsor Road and onto Andrew Road, towards the leisure centre.

The pipe near Elizabethan Court burst at 4am this morning and the team on site has since encountered engineering problems, delaying the repair process.

At Tesco superstore, on Terra Nova Way, Welsh Water has been distributing water bottles to anyone in Penarth that needs them.

"We're here for the foreseeable I reckon," a worker told Nub News. He estimated six pallets worth of bottles had been handed out.

"We had about 60 people waiting when we first got here, but it's calmed down now."

Inside Tesco, the shelves for bottled water were empty.

Further along Windsor Road, Welsh Water workers were pumping water into the network from tankers, to resupply those who were cut off this morning.

But in the town centre, many businesses were forced to close due to the lack of water supply.

The Windsor, Thompsons Butchers, Love Brownies, Windsor Restaurant and Tearooms, Ocho Lounge and Costa were among those that were shut today.

Foxy's Deli was able to remain open, having not been affected by the burst pipe. On social media the café posted that drinking water and the facilities were open to those that needed it.

"It was crazy today, we had loads of people coming in," owner Sian Fox told Nub News.

"We're just lucky we weren't affected. But we'll be back open tomorrow from 8am if anyone needs water again."
