Posh Fish and Chips is Coming to Penarth
The Posh Fish and Chip Company has been granted planning permission and has announced that it will officially be expanding into Penarth.
The shop will be moving into the vacant building, Image, on Glebe Street which was previously a retail shop on the ground floor and a hair salon on the second.
The company announced the news on their Facebook. They said: ''After months of waiting and hard work from our architects and planner, we have finally received full notification that our new flagship store in Penarth has been given full planning permission this morning. Posh fish Penarth we are coming!''
The proposal outlines the plans for the luxury fish and chip shop, known as "Posh Fish and Chips", which has operated very successfully in Cardiff, Llantrisant road, for a number of years.
It has already received a variety of accolades for its food. The business was a finalist in The Food Awards Wales 2019 as well as being awarded a place in the top 60 Fish and Chip shops in the UK in The National Fish & Chip Awards 2018 and 2019.
They were also awarded Fry 50's best fish and chip shops in the UK 2017 and 2018.
The application explains the business' competitive edge. It says: ''The business also aims to serve diners seeking high quality food, as opposed to a more typical takeaway which might seek to operate late into the night.''
The plans also outline a modern filtration system to avoid concerns of smells lingering in the town centre.
It states: ''The business aims to provide the highest quality fish and chips and "fits out" its premises with high quality frying ranges and the newest technology in fume extraction and odour filtration to ensure that odour is minimal.''
The shop would be open from 11:30 am - 10:00 pm Monday - Saturday and Sunday from 4:30 pm - 10:00 pm.
The plans highlight this as: ''The proposed A3 business differs from many others in that there is no desire to trade late into the night, when disturbance issues typically arise. The applicant operates the business on the same model in Cardiff.''
Two flats above the shop were included in the original plans but these have since been omitted.
However, the final report states that the business ''would not prevent the beneficial use or reuse of upper floors.''
Regarding transport and parking issues, the application states: ''The property is not served by off street parking and this will not change.
''There is on street parking available within the vicinity of the site.
''However, the site is located within a highly sustainable location and only a short walk from bus stops, the train station and a myriad of services, facilities and employment opportunities.''
Penarth Town Council raised no objections to the plans.
Local Councillor, Neil Thomas, said: ''This shop has had a number of C1 occupiers which have not been successful.
''There are already a large number of hot food outlets on Glebe Street and nearby and one must wonder just how many the market can bear but this is a matter of commercial competition rather than planning law.
''I am sure some objections that refer to the cooking smells from fried food will be raised but the modern filtration system proposed should minimise this.
A number of complaints were sent in by local residents regarding the application.
A petition was submitted and signed by 1256 people objecting to the application on the following grounds:
· There is already a high concentration of takeaways/cafes in the area· Penarth needs to retain and attract more retail business to the area
· Proposal would add to traffic congestion and hazards to pedestrians and motorists· Due to the proximity of the town centre, smells would linger around the town centre
