Nominations for the St David Awards have been announced and a Penarth volunteer has been shortlisted in the Community Spirit category.

Carole Anne Dacey, a former auxiliary nurse, has been recognised for her work with the Salvation Army and the Samaritans, as well as her voluntary work with HMP Cardiff in training prisoners to take on volunteer roles.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Carole worked additional shifts at the Samaritans centre to help keep the service running and prepared over 260 packed breakfasts and lunches every day for the homeless staying at Salvation Army hostels.

First Minister Mark Drakeford, who announced the finalists, said: "Some of the people shortlisted have shown extraordinary acts of bravery and determination. Others have shown incredible community spirit despite the pressures of living through the coronavirus pandemic.

He continued: "Our finalists are astonishing people, and we are very fortunate they call Wales home. I would like to congratulate all those who have been shortlisted and I want to thank everyone who took the time to nominate someone for an award – unfortunately not everyone can make the shortlist."

Other nominees in the category are Ruth Dodsworth, the ITV presenter campaigning against coercive control and helps Wales' police forces to spot the signs of domestic abuse, and Siop Griffiths, an enterprise in Penygroes, Dyffryn Nantlle in Gwynedd that creates local solutions to give young people opportunities to stay and thrive in their community.

Carole was also presented with Penarth Town Council's Outstanding Citizens Award in September last year by Cllr Ian Buckley, Penarth's Town Mayor.

The winners will be announced in a ceremony on April 7.
