A Penarth family has pledged to run one mile a day during the month of April to raise money for Ukrainian refugees.

As part of the #togetherwerun campaign from the UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, the Davies family started running at the beginning of this month and will finish the challenge on April 26.

Gareth Davies, 46, a teacher at St Cyres School in Penarth, is running with his wife Alisha and two children, Huw and Elsie. "Both our children read The Week Junior, a magazine for juniors that covers world stories," said Gareth.

"They read what was happening in Ukraine, they heard about it on the radio too, and both wanted to do something to help.

"My wife, Alisha, saw that the UNHCR was doing a themed run to raise money throughout April, so we decided to take part. Alisha runs anyway and Huw and Elsie are quite sporty too – they play football and tennis, so they were up for the challenge."

The family are running different routes around Penarth, covering areas from the coastal path to the pier, as well as the railway path behind Penarth train station towards Cosmeston. "It's a good experience for us four to do it together, to spend around 15 minutes completing the mile run every day," said Gareth.

"We thought about having a daily theme to try and raise as much money as we could, and we run with the Ukrainian flag every day."

Photos from the daily runs are uploaded to the family's JustGiving page with a short update on how long it took and any other activities that happened.

The initial target was £750, which pays for ten children to go back to school. But at the time of writing this article, the page hit a total of £1,022.

The Davies family is open to any suggestions for daily themes. You can send your ideas to Gareth on Twitter.
