Tree Forum branch of Penarth Civic Society puts down roots

Climate change is top of many people's agenda at present and trees play an important role in helping to minimise its effects.

With this in mind, Penarth Civic Society (PCS) members involved in the Society's Tree Forum are proud to continue their important work planting new trees and working to replace felled trees.

Tree volunteers, in close collaboration with the the Vale of Glamorgan Council, worked tirelessly over the summer months tending to Penarth's newly planted trees.

Very few trees are thought to have died, which is in large part due to the Penarth Civic Society (PCS).

Any member interested in lending a hand going forward can contact us on the Penarth Civic Society website.

Unfortunately, the Vale council has needed to remove large numbers of trees due to Ash Dieback disease.

The removal of trees is particularly evident on the Railway Path and on Windsor Road.

When all tree removal works have been completed we will begin replanting on the Railway Path. We will also lobby for replacement trees in Windsor Road.

In our tree survey earlier this year we asked if residents would be prepared to help fund street trees and 81 responded yes.

A number of councils throughout Britain have set up such sponsorship schemes and the Vale of Glamorgan Council has planted a number of new street trees in Gladstone Road and Barry.

We are keen to set up a similar sponsorship scheme for street trees here in Penarth.

Understandably, work on the Vale's Tree Strategy was put on hold during the pandemic but we will continue to push for progress. The council has announced a Climate Emergency and a Tree Strategy must be part of counteracting measures.

You can support the work of the Penarth Civic Society by becoming a member, individual membership costs £10.00 and it is £15.00 for a couple, per year. For more information head to the Penarth Civic Society website.
