The community group Helping Hands Penarth is raffling eight hampers to raise funds to support their volunteering work and that of others.

Founded in lockdown, the group strives to "bring together the whole community to unite against the COVID-19 challenges."

Throughout the pandemic, they have helped the vulnerable and provided aid to frontline workers.

They have organised book collection boxes for children, delivered necessities to care homes, battled loneliness and even sourced PPE during the supply crisis.

Much of this has been funded by the sale of homemade masks.

Following the success of their Christmas prize draw, which raised £231, they are now raffling off an array of bottles and chocolates supplied by the Tesco Express on Herbert Terrace.

The draw will take place on Bank Holiday Monday, 3 May.

"It is so kind of Tesco to do this just a few months after supporting our Christmas raffle as well," said raffle organiser and Helping Hands volunteer Caroline Rich.

"They've been brilliant. Thanks to them we've been able to create some drinks hampers, some chocolate hampers, and some with beauty products too supplied by other donors.

"Altogether we're raffling off eight hampers and we're really excited to see what sort of response we get."

Items up for grabs include Grey Goose vodka, Havana Club rum, Quality Streets and an array of beauty products included in the pamper hamper.

Although the pandemic is hopefully reaching its latter stages and life is steadily returning to normal, the group are still performing various duties.

They run a befriending service, walk the dogs of those suffering from long COVID and continue to operate their book collection boxes.

But the easing of restrictions has freed the group up to donate their resources to help other worthy causes.

"Do you know of a worthwhile and deserving charity or group locally who could benefit from some financial help from us?" Helping Hands founder Kathryn Easthope posted on the group's Facebook page.

"If so, we would like to hear from you. They don't have to be a charity, but they must be local (ie, provide their services to the Penarth area). To keep everything peaceful please do not nominate any religious or political groups/charities."

Caroline says she hopes to surpass the total raised in the last raffle.

"If we can beat the Christmas total that would be amazing. The more money we raise, the more we can give to other community groups and charities."

Since speaking with Caroline, the raffle has surpassed the previous raffle's total by a considerable margin.

Sixty-five donors have raised £938 between them.

To enter the draw, make a donation (minimum £1) via the GoFundMe page HERE or deliver money in a sealed envelope with your name and email address into Rowley's Jewellers on Glebe Street.
