An illustrated talk by local historian Alan Thorne
The history of Penarth Yacht Club and its surrounds
Ship builders, ship captains, ship chandlers, ship owners and ship wrecks
Alan has spent the last few months delving into the archives of the Yacht Club, his talk will feature the history of boating in Penarth, the building of the original club and subsequent extensions and he will talk about significant past members including Sir Harold Clayton and Sven Hansen, famous for his impressive 150 foot yacht, staffed by up to 30 men!.
We will find out about the inner sanctum and the goings on there, now known as Wallacher's room, Alan will also explain where that name came from and how strictly membership was controlled, with only the most "respectable" of people, with the "correct" social background being admitted.
Alan will also tell us about numerous myths associated with the Club, well known tales which are often quoted as facts, but are no more than fables.
No charge for admission, members and non-members alike are invited to enjoy what should be an entertaining and interesting evening. Doors and bar open at 18.30 for 19.00 start
