What would happen if the greatest secret in human history could no longer be kept?
From legendary director Steven Spielberg comes Disclosure Day, an ambitious science-fiction thriller that returns the filmmaker to the territory of extraterrestrial life, government secrecy and humanity's fascination with what might exist beyond our world.
For decades, questions about unidentified objects, unexplained encounters and the possibility of life beyond Earth have existed on the fringes of public consciousness. But when a series of extraordinary events begins to suggest that the truth may be far stranger than anyone imagined, the carefully constructed wall of secrecy starts to crumble.
At the centre of the story is Margaret Fairchild (Emily Blunt), a television meteorologist whose seemingly ordinary life is transformed following a mysterious encounter. As Margaret begins experiencing phenomena she cannot explain, she finds herself drawn into something much larger — a mystery that appears to challenge everything humanity believes about its place in the universe.
Meanwhile, Daniel Kellner (Josh O'Connor) becomes determined to expose information that powerful people would rather remain hidden. As he attempts to bring the truth into the open, he finds himself pursued by those determined to prevent the world's most extraordinary secret from becoming public knowledge.
Their stories gradually converge as evidence mounts that humanity may not be alone — and perhaps never has been.
With the authorities struggling to maintain control and the possibility of disclosure moving ever closer, the question is no longer simply whether extraterrestrial life exists. It is whether the world is ready to discover the truth.
Emily Blunt and Josh O'Connor lead an outstanding ensemble cast that also includes Colin Firth, Eve Hewson and Colman Domingo. Created and directed by Steven Spielberg, Disclosure Day sees one of cinema's greatest storytellers return to a subject that has fascinated him throughout his career. From the wonder of Close Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial to the darker tension of War of the Worlds, Spielberg has repeatedly explored humanity's imagined encounters with life from beyond Earth.
This time, however, the question is different. Rather than asking what would happen if visitors arrived, Disclosure Day asks what would happen if they were already here — and someone could finally prove it.
The screenplay comes from David Koepp, based on an original story by Spielberg. Their previous collaborations include Jurassic Park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, War of the Worlds and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
Combining mystery, conspiracy, spectacular science fiction and human drama, Disclosure Day is classic big-screen Spielberg: a story about ordinary people confronting something extraordinary and a secret too enormous to remain hidden forever.
Because if someone could finally prove that we are not alone, the truth wouldn't belong to governments, scientists or those who had kept it hidden. It would belong to everyone.
