Blue Moon is an intimate period drama that chronicles a single, pivotal night in the life of Lorenz Hart, the brilliant but deeply troubled lyricist of the famed Rodgers and Hart partnership. On the evening of March 31, 1943, Hart finds himself alone in Sardi's Bar, confronting his shattered self-confidence as Broadway celebrates the opening night of Oklahoma! the ground-breaking musical created by his former collaborator Richard Rodgers.
Set against the backdrop of the triumphant Broadway opening of Oklahoma!, the film traces Hart's emotional unravelling as he grapples with severe alcoholism, declining mental health, and the quiet devastation of being professionally and personally sidelined.
As the theatre world celebrates the dawn of a new era in American musical theatre, Hart wanders through bars, parties, and backstage spaces, desperately trying to maintain his wit, dignity, and relevance. The night becomes a reckoning: memories of past success clash with present loneliness, and sharp humour masks deep insecurity and grief.
Rather than focusing on spectacle, Blue Moon strips away spectacle to reveal a piercing character study of an artist watching history pass him by. Darkly funny and deeply human, the film captures the cost of brilliance undone by addiction, self-doubt, and the slow erosion of identity.
