A United Kingdom - Based on a True Story.
In the late 1940s, the foundations of empire are shaken when Seretse Khama, heir to the throne of Bechuanaland, falls in love with and marries Ruth Williams Khama, a white London office worker. Their union ignites international controversy at a time when racial segregation defines both colonial Africa and postwar Britain.
Defying fierce opposition from the British government, neighboring apartheid South Africa, and even Seretse's own tribal elders, the couple's marriage becomes a flashpoint for global politics. Britain, eager to maintain strategic alliances and protect imperial interests, exiles Seretse from his homeland, testing the resilience of their love and their belief in justice.
As Ruth faces isolation and hostility in Africa, and Seretse challenges imperial authority through diplomacy and sacrifice, A United Kingdom tells a powerful true story of love against the odds—one that helped lay the groundwork for Botswana's independence and redefined the meaning of leadership, equality, and national identity in both United Kingdom and Botswana.
