BECKS Treharne made it five in a row as she won Penarth Lawn Tennis Club's women's singles championship on Saturday (12 July).

140 years after the first championships at the Rectory Road club, the gardens were full of spectators for the gala finals day event and the evening awards ceremony.

Becks was joined on the podium by James Linney, who won his fourth consecutive mens singles title. She also won the mixed doubles with partner Joe Hall.

"There is a real buzz around the club when the championships come around," said coach and 13-times winner Rob Cunningham.

"It was great to see so many members joining in and participating in the competition."

The historic club's awards ceremony was attended by the club's longest serving member, Margaret Jackson (92), who joined in 1949. She is a former doubles and mixed doubles champion and presented prizes at Saturday's event alongside Vice President and life member Sue Jones.

Members celebrated the end of annual championship with street food and a cake sale, which raised nearly £300 for the club's nominated charities.
