This Sunday, RNLI Penarth has arranged a Yellow Welly Walk in aid of the annual Mayday fundraising event. Join the crew and local community for a walk along the coastal line to show your support for their cause.

The walk will start at the RNLI station on Penarth's Esplanade at 10:30am. The group will then walk along the beach to Lavernock point and back to the station via the Wales coastal path. Refreshments will then be provided when the group returns.

There is a suggested donation of £5 per adult and £1 per child. Dogs are also welcome on the walk. Sara Siddall says, ''donations are towards the May Day campaign''.

Mayday is the RNLI's yellow-themed annual fundraising campaign, which runs from 1st-31st of May. The campaign aids volunteer lifeboat crews, who are on call 24 hours a day, every day, to save lives at sea.

This year, the RNLI hope to raise £700,000 nationwide to fund the vital kit that protects them in all weathers. That target could buy 117 layered clothing and boots, 651 helmets, 410 life jackets and 7,502 pairs of gloves. Kitting out an inshore lifeboat crew member costs approximately £2,161.

As well as the Yellow Welly Walk, the group will picking up plastic during the walk. ''It is the first time we've incorporated collecting plastic. The last few walks have been through the town rather than along the coast,'' says Sara. This will no doubt be welcome news to Penarth's Plastic Free campaign.
