Gwyrddio Penarth Greening (GPG), a local environmental group, has commenced preparations to plant a Fruit Garden in Wordsworth Park as part of its 'Growing Community' initiative.

The group received a 'Fruit Garden Pack' from the charity Keep Wales Tidy as part of their Local Places for Nature fund.

The package includes:

- Fruit trees and guards

- Soft fruit bushes and herbs

- Wildflower seed mix

- Raised bed made from recycled plastic (1.2m x 1.4m)

- Peat-free compost and topsoil

- Hand tools

Members of the GPG were joined by horticulturally-minded residents in Wordsworth Park yesterday (Sunday 6 December) morning.

They discussed design plans and began testing soil conditions using spades brought from home.

Eurgain Powell, who leads the Growing Community initiative, intends to utilise the wooden panels she has been collecting to construct planter boxes.

"We're really excited about starting to create the community garden at Wordsworth Park and it was great to have so many people along this morning who want to help," she told Nub News.

"We will be meeting there on Sunday mornings from 10:30 to do the landscaping work, install the raised bed & eventually plant fruit bushes, herbs and a few small fruit trees.

"Anyone is welcome to join; we'd also welcome donations of spare plants for the garden."

Follow the Growing Community's Facebook page for further information.
