What's under the pier?

Any ideas?

Still visible beneath Penarth Pier is the seawater inlet pipe for the former Penarth Baths.

The murky waters of the Bristol Channel, which would also have been thick with coal dust were pumped into settlement tanks in what is now Alexandra Park before being filtered and used in the pool.

In its early years (the pool opened in 1884/5), the pool was drained in the winter months and used as a gymnasium.

The baths closed in 1984 the day before the new leisure centre opened with all the staff of both facilities enjoying a final swim.

The building was used as a bar and restaurant known as 'Inn At The Deep End', then as a line dancing venue 'Silver Spur' but it later became derelict until conversion into four unique houses.

Scroll through the gallery for pictures of the pumphouse and swimming baths.
