What are they filming on the Pier?

By Alex Jones 18th Mar 2021

Penarth Pier is set to feature in Season Three of the Netflix comedy-drama Sex Education.

A film crew and brightly clad extras descended on the landmark this morning. Nub News did not spot any recognisable faces.

The Sea Angling Club has been transformed into a "Ticket Office", hinting that the Pier may be used as setting for a farewell ferry finale.

Created by Laurie Nunn, Sex Education follows the story of Otis Milburn, an insecure teenage who is ambivalent towards sex in spite (or perhaps because) of his mother being a sex therapist.

Much of the show takes place in school, with many indoor assembly scenes from the first two seasons being shot in the Paget Rooms.

The interior of Penarth's foremost events venue first appeared in Season One, Episode Three as the backdrop for a congregation of teachers and students before later serving as the filming location for a school dance scene.

Season Three was announced on 10 February 2020, and a year later the film crew set up camp at Cosmeston Lakes car park and began shooting further scenes at the Paget Rooms.

Penarth Pier featured in the 2018 Amazon Prime movie Say My Name, Nub News has just found out.

Resident Doug Deans says he was surprised to see the iconic landmark form the backdrop to the romantic comedy's climax.

Say My Name, directed by Jay Stern, tells the story of a one-night stand being interrupted by a robbery and the couple's ensuing struggle to reclaim their stolen goods.

The film is set on a fictional Welsh island, with our beloved pier stepping up as a ferry port.

It was filmed in 2017 and released the following year, when scenes in the 2020 movie Six Minutes to Midnight, featuring Judi Dench and Eddie Izzard, were also filmed on the Esplanade.

Production companies frequently use the Vale of Glamorgan as a filming location, as THIS database shows.

Watch out for the Pier when Season Three airs. No release date has yet been set.
