A ferry famous in Penarth for its yearly visits has crashed into the Scottish island of Arran's Brodrick Pier.

The collision took place at roughly 5PM yesterday (Thursday 4 September). Twenty-four passengers have been injured.

One onlooker told the BBC he saw the iconic paddle steamer approaching the pier "far too fast" before hearing a loud crash.

A large dent has appeared on vessel's bow. No reports suggest any severe damage to the pier.

The Waverley spends a couple of weeks in the Bristol channel each year, sailing from Penarth to Ilfracombe, Lundy, Bristol and onwards. It is considered to be one of the last seafaring paddle steamers on earth.

This is not the first time the boat has run into trouble. In 1977, the Waverley was badly damaged when it ran aground upon the rocks near a navigation beacon in Dunoon. Just two years ago it struck Rothesay Pier, this time leaving no one injured.

The precise cause of yesterday's incident is currently unknown.
